NEW ORLEANS - Nicholls State University senior guard
Cassidy Barrios has been selected as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Women's Basketball Player of the Year for the second straight season, the organization announced Saturday morning.
Voting was conducted by media members from Louisiana and the state's sports information directors.
Barrios was also the Player of the Year last year and becomes the first repeat winner since LSU's Theresa Plaisance won the honor in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Barrios and Plaisance, who is the daughter of Colonel head coach
DoBee Plaisance, both prepped at Vandebilt Catholic. In 2018, Barrios became the first non-LA Tech/LSU player to win the award since 1994 and was the first outright winner not wearing a Tigers or Lady Techster jersey since 1986. In addition to earning the state's top honor, Barrios was one of 15 players to be named All-Louisiana, earning first-team recognition for the second time as well.
A native of Raceland, La., Barrios averaged 20.6 points (19th in the NCAA) and 10.8 rebounds (24th) per game and was one of six Division I players to average 20 and 10 this past season. Her 660 points set a school single-season record, which was the ninth best in Southland Conference history, and she closed her career with a school record 1,993 points.
Barrios also collected 20 double-doubles on the year, ranking 11th in the NCAA and tying for sixth all-time for a single season in the Southland.
Barrios proved to be one of the most versatile players in the NCAA as she was the lone 20 and 10 player to average at least four assists (4.3). In the Southland, she ranked in the top six in assists, steals, and blocks.
After making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history last season, the Barrios-led Colonels posted another historic campaign. Nicholls set a program record with 20 victories and won the most Southland games in team history at 14-4. The 20 wins garnered Nicholls an invite to the Women's Basketball Invitational.
