CHOUDRANT, La. – The Nicholls State University men's golf team tacked on three strokes from Sunday's score to card a 308 in the second round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at the Squire Creek Country Club.
The score dropped the Colonels (613) behind Stephen F. Austin (610) heading into Tuesday's final round. Nicholls trails the 'Jacks by three strokes and is eight behind Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana Tech (B).
"Not what we were looking for with our starting five," said
James Schilling, Nicholls head golf coach. "We continue to not hit the ball well enough from tee to green, and this golf course is far too difficult to rely on trying to put the ball up and down. Hopefully tomorrow, we can hit more fairways and greens in regulation, which will take the pressure off and allow us to make a few more birdies."
While
Nils Dobrunz' 3-over 75 kept the freshman as the team leader at tied for 53rd with a two-round score of 150, it was classmate
Ryan O'Neil who led Nicholls with a 1-over 73 on Monday. Playing as an independent, O'Neil had six birdies in the round, with five coming on the front where he was 3-under. The performance catapulted him 15 spots up the leaderboard.
Ben Baker followed with a 4-over 76, and
Connor Campbell was two strokes back at 6-over.
Mickael Najmark and
Warut Wongrungroj each shot a 79.
The University of Georgia enters Tuesday with the team lead at 565, leading Texas State by two strokes. Troy's Connor Futrell and Central Arkansas' Trey DePriest are atop the leaderboard at 6-under.
