IRVING, Texas – Nicholls State University senior running back
Dontrell Taylor has been named semifinalist for the 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy presented by Mazda, the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.
Taylor, who has a 3.72 GPA as a petroleum services safety technology major, is one of 185 student-athletes at the NCAA and NAIA level to make the list. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership.
Taylor has yet to play in 2019 due to an injury but is coming off a stellar junior campaign. He was named All-Southland Second Team after rushing for 990 yards with a school-record 7.2 yards per carry. Taylor also matched the program mark with five 100-yard games and totaled 10 touchdowns which included his first career TD reception.
A native of White Castle, Louisiana, Taylor has been selected Southland All-Academic twice in his career and was a 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree last year.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 30, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2019 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 30th Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Nicholls will head back to Texas for the third consecutive week, ending its nonconference slate against FBS Texas State on Saturday, September 28. Kickoff is San Marcos is scheduled for 6 p.m.
