THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to maintain its recent success against Houston Baptist University as the Colonels square off against the Huskies Wednesday night in Sharp Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Colonels (4-13, 1-7 SLC) carry a five-game winning streak in the series against HBU (4-11, 0-6 SLC) and are aiming to climb up the standings. With only one league win, Nicholls is second-to-last in the Southland and lead only HBU, which is searching for its first SLC victory this season.
Nicholls won last Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana but was unable to carry that momentum into the following two games, falling at Northwestern State and at home against Central Arkansas. The Colonels struggled to find offense in both of the losses, scoring 54 and 46 points. Nicholls averaged 72.0 points per game in the previous three contests.
Although the team was held to 25 percent shooting against UCA, senior
Airi Hamilton had a strong showing by knocking down 5 of 10 from the field for a game-high 14 points. Hamilton has been a mainstay in the Colonel lineup averaging a Southland-high 38.1 minutes per game. Along with averaging 11.2 points, Hamilton ranks eighth in conference in field-goal percentage at .476.
HBU has dropped its last seven games since a win over ULM, who the Colonels also defeated in December. The Huskies played first-place Sam Houston State on Saturday and were handed a 97-69 loss at home. Shannon Jones shined in the outing with 18 points, missing just two shots, and added three steals and two blocks.
For the season, Megan Valdez-Crader leads the Huskies at 10.4 points per game. Timia Jefferson is second on the team at 9.6 points.
