Colonels sweep Saturday action in Black and Gold Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Nicholls State University softball team won its second and third consecutive games Saturday with a 5-0 blanking of Mercer before run-ruling host Alabama State in five innings, 11-2, in the second day of the Black and Gold Tournament.

The Colonels (10-12) will finish up the weekend on Sunday against Eastern Kentucky. First pitch against the other Colonels is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

Jordan Moon was the star against Mercer, tossing a two-hit shutout for the victory. Caitlin Garcia led the offense with two RBIs, including an RBI single in the first inning.

Nicholls totaled 10 hits in the win, with Corynn Major, Nikki Whitehead and Samantha Mracich each tallying two.

The Colonels scored three runs in the third, starting with a Kennedy Hebert RBI single. Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly and Yasmeen Williams made it 4-0 with a base knock down the left field line.

Major was responsible for the final run, driving in Whitehead on a sac fly in the fourth.

Moon retired the Bears in order in four innings, including a 1-2-3 effort in the seventh. The win improved her record to 4-4.

Against Alabama State, Nicholls jumped all over the Hornets with eight runs in the first and needed just five innings for the 11-2 victory.
