Nicholls Football sets 2020 schedule

2020 SCHEDULE

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football program revealed Friday its 2020 game schedule, which is highlighted by five home games and the Colonels' first-ever meeting with LSU.

Under the direction of head coach Tim Rebowe last year, Nicholls repeated as Southland Conference champions, earned a third straight playoff appearance, and won nine games in back-to-back seasons -- all firsts in program history.

Another first is on the horizon as Nicholls heads to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge to face defending FBS National Champion LSU on Oct. 3. The Tigers went undefeated with a 15-0 record last year and gave Ed Orgeron his first national title in just his third season as the head coach. A native of Larose, Louisiana, Orgeron served as an assistant coach at Nicholls early in his career in 1994.

LSU will be one of two nonconference matchups for the Colonels in 2020. Nicholls makes it season and John L. Guidry Stadium debut against Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 5. While the two teams met once in 1998 in New Orleans with the Colonels winning 41-26, the opener marks the first meeting in Thibodaux.

With four consecutive winning seasons in the Southland and a 21-6 record over the last three, Nicholls begins its quest for a third straight league title at Northwestern State on Sept. 12. The rest of the month pits the Colonels against Sam Houston State at home (19th) and at Central Arkansas (26th). UCA was one of three teams that made the FCS playoffs last year that Nicholls defeated.

Following the LSU game, the Colonels are back at home against Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 10) before heading on the road to close out a stretch of four away games in five weeks. The next two are in Texas against Abilene Christian (17th) and HBU (24th). Nicholls ends the month hosting UIW (31st).

The Colonels begin November at McNeese (7th) and have a bye the following weekend. Per the usual, the regular season closes with the annual River Bell Classic against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday, Nov. 19 at Guidry Stadium. Nicholls came out on top in last year's matchup, 28-27, in Hammond in one of the most thrilling games in the series' history. It served as a de facto championship game as the winner claimed the league's title and an automatic bid into the FCS playoffs.

In Rebowe's fifth year at the helm, Nicholls swept its Louisiana rivals for the first time since 2005. The Colonels also finished 5-1 at home and are 20-7 at Guidry Stadium under Rebowe, highlighted by two playoff wins the last two seasons.

Due to the ongoing health concerns with COVID-19, Nicholls had only one spring practice and its spring game scheduled for tomorrow, April 4, was canceled as well.
