FRISCO, Texas -- Late Tuesday morning, the Southland Conference officially announced the league's 2020 All-Academic track & field selections, tabbing Nicholls State University sophomores
Omo Oboh (women) and
Dustin Worley (men) for the honor. The duo helped the Colonels stay competitive on the track throughout the indoor season, as Oboh captured many of the team's headlines behind a number of solid finishes or moving up the school record book
and Worley set a pair of new personal bests, all while the pair maintained a 3.18 GPA in nursing and 3.83 GPA in chemistry, respectively.
Despite the Southland Conference Indoor Championships serving as just her fourth-ever attempt in the 60m Hurdles, Oboh snapped her own program mark behind a 8.57 time in the event, notching a third-place podium finish in the process. The sophomore also assisted the Red & Gray 4x400m Relay team in breaking a school record, acting as the leadoff runner as the squad clinched sixth place overall behind a 3:47.37 mark.
"I am thrilled for Omo to be recognized by the conference for her hard work on the track and in the classroom this semester," head track & field coach Stefanie Slekis said. "It was amazing to see how well she handled her first nursing semester while setting two school records (60m Hurdles, 4 X 400m relay) and a two-second personal best in the 400m, all during the indoor season. She trusted assistant coach Courtney Lord's plan to teach her the 60m Hurdles this year and it paid off tremendously and I cannot wait to see what they can accomplish together next year in outdoor track & field in Omo's signature event, the 400m hurdles."
Worley, meanwhile, posted personal lows in both the 3,000m and 5,000m Runs -- clocked a 9:01.73 and 16:17.77 mark, respectively -- and served as the anchor on the men's Distance Medley Relay squad. The Texas native will also serve as the first member of the men's squad to earn a spot on the league's All-Academic team since the program was reinstated under third-year head coach Slekis.
"Dustin has always been an exceptional student so I am most proud of the big breakthroughs he made this year in his ability to help lead our men's team at practice and push himself to new levels in his races," Slekis continued. "He continued the big improvements he made during the 2019 cross country season by taking 26 seconds off of his 3000m time during the indoor track & field season. Dustin came to Nicholls with the goal of rebuilding our men's program as track & field was reinstated just last year during his freshman campaign and him being named to the Southland Conference All-Academic Team is another big step for him leading our young program."
