THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team returns to Thibodaux to begin a stretch of four home games out of the next five, starting Saturday, Jan. 9 against rival Southeastern Louisiana. Tipoff in Stopher Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Colonels (2-7, 1-1 SLC) will be looking to bounce back from a rough outing at Lamar where they scored a season-low 40 points on 12 made field goals. Nicholls had a completely different showing in its SLC opening win over Sam Houston State, scoring 89 points on 47 percent shooting.
In the three home games, Nicholls is plus-19 in turnover and is holding teams to 40 percent from the field. On offense, the Red and Gray is averaging 76.7 points at Stopher and has four players in double figures, led by
Chelsea Cain's 17.0 ppg. Cain, who earned Southland Player of the Week on Monday, averages a team-best 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds for the season.
Despite having several games wiped out due to COVID, Southeastern Louisiana (3-2, 2-0 SLC) has played well to start conference, taking down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State. The Lady Lions picked up a road win over Sam Houston on Saturday behind 17 points from Hailey Giaratano and Cierria Cunningham.
SLU has three players averaging double figures in scoring, paced by Giaratano's 12.2 points per game. Cunningham and Morgan Carrier are averaging 10.8 and 10.6 ppg, respectively.
The Colonels have won five straight in the series and are 15-5 against the Lady Lions over the last 10 years.
