FIRST FIVE

• The Nicholls State University football team will play its final home game of the regular season, hosting nationally-ranked UIW for Senior Day. The Colonels have won their last three games and a win Saturday would keep their hopes of a Southland championship alive, which would be their third in the last four seasons. The game will kickoff at 3 p.m., airing ESPN3 and can be listened to on ESPN Radio New Orleans 100.3 FM.

• Nicholls accomplished a feat last Saturday it had not done since 2008 -- beating McNeese on its home turf. The Colonels notched win No. 3 in a row with a 24-14 victory over the Cowboys to climb to 4-2 in conference. After trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, backup quarterback Kohen Granier subbed in to lead the Colonels to three touchdown drives while the defense allowed just one more score the rest of the way. Running back Collin Guggenheim headed the offense with 125 yards rushing, which was his third consecutive 100-yard game. Linebacker Ty'Ree Evans paced the defense with his third nine-tackle game of the season.

• Nicholls and UIW will be squaring off for the second time this season and ninth time overall. After the Cardinal win in October snapped a five-game winning streak in the series by Nicholls and dropped their lead to 5-3 all-time. The Colonels jumped out to a 21-7 advantage in the first half, but UIW shut down the offense the rest of the way and scored 31 unanswered points. The last meeting in Thibodaux was a shootout as the teams racked up 120 points in the Colonels' 75-45 win in the spring.

• UIW moved into a tie for first place with its 55-52 win at home against Southeastern, improving to 7-2 for the season and 5-1 in conference. Quarterback Cameron Ward was named FCS National Player of the Week after throwing for 610 yards and seven touchdowns in the victory over the Lions. Ward has been dynamic again for UIW, averaging 380 yards passing per game and has 33 touchdown passes with only seven interceptions. In the spring matchup against the Colonels, he totaled 470 yards through the air and six touchdowns.

• Nicholls will be honoring its 2021 Senior Class before the game on Saturday. A total of 11 players will recognized for senior day -- P.J. Burkhalter, Dai'Jean Dixon, Ty'Ree Evans, Kevin Johnson, Jair Joseph, Jequaries Martin, Arron McKenney, Kevin Moore III, David Mosley, Lindsey Scott Jr., and Myles Vigne. Half of the group started their playing careers for the Colonels in 2017 and have claimed 35 victories with three playoff appearances and two Southland Conference championships.

BY THE NUMBERS

3.22 - The Colonel offensive line has not only been dominant in the rushing game, but the unit ranks second in the FCS in tackles for loss allowed at 3.22 per game.

120 - The last time Nicholls and UIW met in Thibodaux, they nearly broke the scoreboard with a combined 120 points scored in the Colonels' 75-45 victory. Nicholls scored 10 touchdowns - 5 passing, 4 rushing and 1 on special teams, and had two field goals. The offenses also combined for 1,194 yards.

135.3 - Freshman Collin Guggenheim has averaged 135.3 yards rushing in his last three games, rushing for 100 yards in all three games. Listed as the fourth string running back heading into fall camp, the Kenner native as averaged 6.2 yards per carry and has five rushing TDs during the stretch. He was the first player this season to rush for 100 against the top-ranked McNeese defense.

1000 - Two Colonels are approaching rare milestones in program history - quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. and wide receiver Dai'Jean Dixon. Scott enters the game needing 83 yards to become the fifth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season. Dixon needs 88 yards to reach 1,000 in receiving for the second time in his career, but it would only be the fourth 1,000-yard season in school  history. Along with Dixon's 1,044 yards in 2019, two players in 1986 - Mark Carrier (1,513) and Brian Stropolo (1,113) - had 1,000-yard campaigns.

A WIN OVER UIW WOULD...

... be the seventh win over a ranked opponent in the Tim Rebowe era. Last was in the spring in the 75-45 victory against No. 13 UIW.
... be the 11th consecutive victory in November, improving the team's record under Coach Rebowe in the month to 16-5.
... give Nicholls a 6-3 advantage in the all-time series vs. UIW.
... improve Rebowe's record vs. Texas schools to 26-12.
... be the 37th Southland Conference win under Coach Rebowe (36-21).
... secure a winning record in the Southland for fifth time in seven years under Rebowe. Would also be the fourth consecutive fall with a winning league mark.

50TH ANNIVERSARY

This season's football squad is wearing a special 50th Anniversary patch to celebrate the half of century of Nicholls Football.
- The logo's outline is shaped in style of the River Bell Classic, the annual rivalry between the Nicholls and Southeastern
- The 50th Year font is styled to represent the classic Nicholls State University logo as well as feature the renowned Red & Gray color scheme
- The five lines of the football (four vertical & one horizontal) symbolize the conference championships won by Nicholls across 50 years on the gridiron. In chronological order, those championships are: the 1975 and 1984 Gulf South Conference Championships along with the 2005, 2018 and 2019 Southland Conference Championships
- The gap in the completion of the football serves as a remainder of all of the alumni and members of the Nicholls Family throughout the years who have passed away. The contributions of this community and alumni base are forever.
- For the finale against UIW, the team will be wearing a special throwback uniform. The jersey consists of various elements of the past including the original N logo, blue stripes from the 80s, and font and a gray stripe from the 90s/2000s.
