CHICAGO - Nicholls State University wide receiver
Dai'Jean Dixon received one top 5 vote for the prestigious Walter Payton Award, as Stats Perform revealed Tuesday the top three vote-getters for the FCS offensive player of the year.
With the vote, Dixon tied for 20th out of the 25 nominees. Quarterbacks Southland Conference Player of the Year Cole Kelley (Southeastern) was named a top 3 finalist while SLC Offensive Player of the Year Cameron Ward (UIW) finished sixth. Dixon was just one of four receivers to be named finalist.
While Nicholls ranked No. 5 in the FCS in rushing this season, Dixon still managed to average 100.2 yards receiving per game (1,002) and hauled in eight touchdown passes. He was one of just six players in the nation to average over 100 yards in the regular season, and also ranked fourth with 7.1 receptions per game (71). He missed the River Bell Classic finale against Southeastern with an injury, a team he averaged 151 yards per outing against in the last three meetings.
Dixon wrapped up his career as the program's all-time leader in receptions (236), receiving yards (3,802) and receiving touchdowns (35) -- all records he broke in the spring. He also ranked in the top 5 in the Southland in all three categories, finishing second, third, and fourth, respectively. With his final touchdown catch in the win over Northwestern State, Dixon set a new program record for points scored with 216. The New Orleans native and Edna Karr product also set new program marks for career 100-yard receiving games (13), single-game receptions (14), and tied the single-game mark for receiving yards with 198. He also had a reception in 50 consecutive games, falling two shy of matching the FCS record.
