HAMMOND, La. - The Nicholls State University softball started the 2021 season with wins over North Texas and South Dakota in the Lion Classic.
 
The Colonels (2-0) got things underway with a 9-7 victory over North Texas. In the second game, Nicholls rolled past South Dakota, 17-1, in a five-inning run-rule triumph. 
 
Scout Blade and 
Ashlyn Reavis led the Colonels at the plate with three hits apiece. 
Emma Holland, 
Skylar Hamilton and 
Kennedy Hebert each had two hits, and Reavis, Holland and Hamilton all drove in three runs. Nicholls did not have a home run on the day but four different players had a double. 
 
Against North Texas, the Colonels scored six straight runs to break a 2-2 tie. Errors in the third and fourth innings put Nicholls ahead 5-2 before Holland brought in two runners on a double. A wild pitch then made it 8-2.
 
With Nicholls leading 9-2 heading into the sixth, the Mean Green rallied by scoring five runs in the final two innings. North Texas took advantage of four walks in the seventh to load the bases with two down, but 
Alexis LaBure escaped any further damage with an infield groundout.
 
Emily Danehower earned with win with three hits allowed and one earned run in 4.0 innings. 
 
In the second game, the Colonels plated nine runs in the first and scored at least two in their four at-bats. After scoring three in the first inning on walks, Reavis cleared the bases with a double. Nicholls needed only seven hits to score the 17 runs, helped by South Dakota issuing 15 walks. 
 
Lulu Vazquez and Hamilton each had run-scoring doubles in the win.
 
Jordan Moon tossed 4.0 innings for the Colonels, surrendering one unearned run on three hits. 
 
UP NEXT
Nicholls wraps up the tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. against South Dakota. The Colonels were scheduled to play a rematch against North Texas but the game was canceled.
