THIBODAUX, La. The Nicholls State University softball team has its home opener doubleheader Friday, February 19 at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park. The Colonels will be facing off against Southern Mississippi and first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. On Saturday, the squad takes on HBU for a nonconference doubleheader starting at noon.
The Colonels are coming off of a 3-0 season opener in the Lion Classic. On the opening day of the tournament, the Colonels won 9-7 against North Texas and again against South Dakota 17-1. On Sunday, the Colonels had another victory over South Dakota, 6-4.
On Tuesday, it was announced by the Southland Conference that Freshman Ashlyn Reavis won hitter of the week. In the Lion Classic, she had five total hits, a double, a triple, five RBIs and a .500 batting average.
Other offensive leaders this season include Scout Blades, Emma Holland and Melise Gossen. Blades posted a .625 batting average, five hits and one RBI. Holland started her junior season with three hits, three RBIs, a double and a .500 batting average. Gossen has three hits, three RBIs and a .375 batting average.
Jordan Moon pitched 4.0 innings in the Colonels 17-1 victory over South Dakota, with Moon only allowing one run and three hits. In 4.0 innings in the Colonels' game against North Texas, Emily Danehower allowed only 3 hits and one run.
The Colonels are 5-6 in the past 11 games in their series against Southern Miss. The Colonels lost the first five of those games but came back to win the next set of five, starting in the 2017 season. The last matchup between the two teams was April 16, 2019, in Hattiesburg. The Colonels lost 7-1 in that game.
Southern Miss is 2-1 in their opening games of the season. HBU saw its opening weekend canceled due to weather.
