THIBODAUX, La. – Winners of two straight, the Nicholls State University softball team will look to keep their winning streak going as the Colonels take on rival Southeastern Louisiana for a three-game series, starting Friday, April 2.
First pitch at Swanner Field is scheduled for 5 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader will begin at noon.
Nicholls (8-13, 1-8 SLC) started out the season hot with four wins in as many games but did not put back-to-back victories again until Tuesday's 6-3 win over Southern.
Taryn Westbrook and
Brittney Turner had solid outings in the circle while the offense pieced together nine hits. One of the hits was a leadoff home run by freshman
Samantha Gwiazda in the third that began a three-run frame.
Ashlyn Reavis posted her second consecutive 2-for-3 outing and leads the Colonels with a .390 batting average and nine multi-hit games.
Kennedy Hebert, who had an RBI double in the win versus Southern, is second at .355 and
Kelsey Miller rounds out the leaders at .333.
Westbrook improved to 2-1 after her four-inning victory and has a team-best 2.75 ERA with 25 strikeouts. Turner tossed three innings and earned the staff's first save of the season.
Southeastern Louisiana (17-13, 7-2 SLC) has won all three Southland series and took two of three against Abilene Christian last weekend. The Lady Lions are batting .284 as a team and have used their speed on the base paths to rack up a NCAA best 89 stolen bases.
Lindsey Rizzo leads the SLU offense with a .402 batting average and is closely followed by Aeriyl Mass' .382 average. Mass brings a 12-game hitting streak to the weekend series.
In the circle, Heather Zumo has been one of the top pitchers in the SLC this season with a 10-2 record and a 2.12 ERA. In SLU's last outing, Zumo tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight batters in a 5-0 victory against ACU.
