Colonels take series against Islanders with 8-2 victory

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team scored runs in four consecutive innings and the pitching staff posted a solid outing as the Colonels won their first Southland series with an 8-2 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at Chapman Field.
 
Nicholls (10-21, 3-15 SLC) totaled 11 hits in the victory with four going for extra bases. Emma Holland and Caitlin Garcia each hit a home run, while Ashlyn Reavis and Lulu Vazquez both had RBI doubles in the third.
 
Alexis LaBure (3-3) picked up the win, recovering from a slow start in the opening inning. She walked three which resulted in an Islander run but went on to toss three shutout innings. Jordan Moon struck out two in 1.2 innings and Emily Danehower closed out the game with an inning of work. 
 
The scoring started for the Colonels in the second with a 2-run home run by Holland. Nicholls then scored three in the third as Melise Gossen plated a run on a groundout between the Reavis and Vazquez doubles. 
 
An Islander error led to another run in the fourth, then Nicholls made the score 8-1 with two in the fifth. Garcia belted a 2-0 pitch over the wall for her first homer of the season, then Kelsey Miller came through with an RBI single.
 
Danehower allowed a run in the seventh before ending the game on a groundout. 
 
LaBure lasted 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and struck out two. Moon also had two strikeouts and did not surrender a hit. 
 
Reavis and Garcia paced the Colonels with two hits apiece, and Skylar Hamilton also had two hits and two runs scored. 
 
Beatriz Lara (12-9) suffered the loss in 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on five hits. Haley Morse had two hits and an RBI for the Islanders.
