MOBILE, Ala. – The Nicholls State University softball team suffered a 10-2 loss in six innings against South Alabama Tuesday night at Jaguar Field.
The Colonels (8-17) were held without a hit until
Corynn Major led off the fifth with a single up the middle. The hit sparked a three-hit inning, highlighted by a run-scoring double off the bat of
Melise Gossen, but it would not prevent South Alabama (18-11) from earning a run-rule victory in the next inning.
Nicholls fell behind in the second when Kamdyn Kvistad and Abby Allen each hit 2-run home runs off of
Taryn Westbrook (2-5) for a 4-0 lead. Gossen's RBI made it 4-1 in the fifth, but the Jaguars got the run back in the bottom half and added three more, capped on another 2-run shot by Victoria Ortiz.
Leading 8-1, USA threatened to end the game in the inning by loading the bases with only one out. But
Alexis LaBure was able to extend the contest by retiring the next two batters.
Alexa Poche' led off the sixth with her second home run, cutting the deficit to 8-2.
Emma Holland followed with a base hit, but it would be the final base runner for the Colonels.
In the bottom half, Kvistad singled up the middle for another RBI before Ortiz doubled to end the game.
Westbrook took the loss after allowing four earned in 1.2 innings. Allie Hughen earned the win for USA, tossing five innings with one earned run on three hits.
