Slow start paves way for Lamar sweep against the Colonels

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team fell behind 5-0 after the first inning in the series finale at Lamar University and despite outhitting the Cardinals in the game, the Colonels came up short in a 9-4 setback Saturday afternoon at LU Softball Complex.

Kelsey Miller was the lone Colonel with a multi-hit day and scored twice, including the final run of a two-run rally in the seventh. Nicholls (11-26, 4-20 SLC) tried to mount a comeback against Lamar (8-40, 4-20 SLC) with three hits in the frame, but would leave the bases loaded after cutting into the deficit.

Freshman Brittney Turner made the start for the Colonels but left the game in the first inning after allowing five runs on four hits and three walks. Her counterpart, Aaliyah Ruiz, kept Nicholls off the board until the fifth inning.

Singles by Syndee Shelton and Skylar Hamilton set up a 2-run double off the bat of Emma Holland. Facing a 3-1 count, Holland nearly recorded her second homer of the season by hitting the top of the fence in left field. But the Cardinals answered with two runs in the bottom half before making it 9-2 in the sixth.

In the seventh, Nicholls put together a two-out rally as two walks and a Miller single resulted in an RBI base hit by Ashlyn Reavis. Caitlin Garcia followed with an RBI single before Ruiz retired Kennedy Hebert on a deep flyout to complete the sweep. Ruiz struck out two and allowed eight hits in the complete game.

Alexis LaBure and Jordan Moon each allowed two runs in relief. LaBure tossed 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and surrendered two hits while Moon had one hit allowed and one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Four of Lamar's seven hits was courtesy of Felixia Hinojosa, who had a double and two RBIs.
