Cain named Southland Conference Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas - Nicholls State University women's basketball forward Chelsea Cain has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Cain matched her career high of 29 points to lead the Colonels to a 69-68 victory at New Orleans Saturday in the opening day of Southland play. She scored the final 14 points for Nicholls including the game-winning putback with six seconds remaining. Cain was perfect down the stretch in the final five minutes, going 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free throw line.

In addition to her 29 points, Cain finished with nine rebounds, three steals and two assists. She shot 11 of 21 from the field and was a perfect 7 of 7 at the free throw line in the win over the Privateers.

The honor marks the second Southland weekly award for her career. An All-Southland First Team selection last season, Cain ranks second in the league in scoring at 16.1 points per game.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
