THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to compete in the 35th annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi.
Nicholls will face Southern Miss on Friday, November 25 at 3 p.m. and Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, November 26 at 3 p.m. The Colonels' game against the Lady Eagles will be streamed live via ESPN+.
The Red & Gray come in with a 2-3 record after dropping their previous game at Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday afternoon. The Colonel offense is led by two forwards that score double figures and contain the glass. Freshman forward
Lexi Alexander scores 10.6 points and snags 8.8 rebounds per contest, while sophomore
Deonna Brister scores 10.4 points and hauls in 7.2 boards per game.
Junior guard
Kyla Hamilton averages 8.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and has shot .500 from 3-point range thus far, while freshman guard
Kayla Keshmeshian and sophomore guard
Amelia Sandie add 6.2 and 6 points per game to round out the Colonel scoring.
Defensively, Nicholls has a solid unit and is one of the best in the nation and running teams from the 3-point line. They force opponents to shoot .259 percent while only allowing just 5.6 makes from deep per contest which is good enough for 83rd out of 349 total teams.
Southern Miss comes into the matchup with Nicholls with a 2-2 record and most recently earned a 72-67 victory over North Alabama.
The Lady Eagles' most productive player is junior guard Dominique Davis who currently holds the eighth-best scoring average in the nation at 24.2. She also contributes 4.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest.
Lani Cornfield and Jacorriah Bracey average 8.8 and 8.3 points, and Melyia Grayson provide 6 points and 10 boards to be a presence inside.
MVSU is led by Zakiya Mahoney who had 13 points and eight boards in Tuesday's matchup bringing her scoring and rebounding average to 9 and 4.8 while adding 3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game to stuff the stat sheet.
Zaria Harleaux also stuffs the stat sheet for the Devilettes and averages 8.5 points, and 6.5 rebounds, including her 16 points and nine rebounds performance on Tuesday. Syann Holmes had 15 points and nine rebounds in Tuesday's contest and Millia Gibson scored 10 points.
The Lady Eagles lead the all-time series 16-2 over the Colonels and the Colonels lead the all-time series over the Devilettes 4-1.
