THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will host Southeastern on Saturday, Dec. 31 for the teams' Southland Conference opener. Tipoff in Stopher Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Nicholls wrapped up its nonconference schedule a week ago in Texas, falling at Abilene Christian and TCU to drop to 3-8. The Colonels will be looking to close out the year with their first victory of the month after starting December with home losses against New Mexico and South Alabama.
The Colonels head into league play last in the conference in scoring at 55.3 points a game, but the average is higher in the five home games at nearly 60 points per contest. Despite falling to South Alabama in the their last game at Stopher Gym, the Colonels had their second highest offensive output in the 74-73 loss.
Freshman
Lexi Alexander leads the Colonels in both scoring (11.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.8), shooting a team best 44 percent from the field. Along with having two double-doubles, Alexander ranks second in the Southland in rebounding and blocks (14).
Kyla Hamilton is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points and ranks in the top 5 in the Southland in 3-pointers made (19) and 3-point percentage (.422).Â
Southeastern comes to Thibodaux with a 5-5 record after dropping its last two. Before the holiday break, SLU lost close matchups at Alabama, 55-45, and 60-51 at Jackson State.
The Colonels and Lady Lions had one common opponent this season -- South Alabama. Nicholls fell by a single point to USA at home while SLUÂ won handedly in Mobile, 64-40.
Southeastern swept the season series a year ago, winning by 18 and 26 points.Â
