Colonels no-hit MVSU in 10-0 run-rule win

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team had another dominating pitching performance against Mississippi Valley State, as Tyler Theriot and Brandon Andrews combined for a seven-inning no-hitter in a 10-0 run-rule victory Saturday evening on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

Theriot (1-1) picked up the win after tossing 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Andrews took over in the seventh and retired MVSU (2-2) in order to secure the first no-hitter at Didier Field since 2014.

Coming off a 16-strikeout effort in Friday's win, the pitching staff received the best start of the early season by Theriot. After allowing back-to-back walks in the first inning, he went on to retire 15 consecutive batters. MVSU was able to out-hit the Colonels Friday with the help of a handful of infield singles, but the Nicholls defense was flawless on Saturday with no errors.

The offense finished with 10 hits with Wes Toups going 3-for-3. The Thibodaux native gave Nicholls the lead in the first with an RBI single to right.

In the third, four hits made way for a three-run frame. Austin Cain and Toups had RBI singles and another run scored on a throwing error.

With Theriot on cruise control through five, Nicholls added to its lead in the bottom half with a 2-run single by Jayden Kay. With two down, Kay sprayed a single to center to plate Baisel Williams and Toups for a 6-0 advantage.

Nicholls then put the run-rule into play with four runs in the sixth, despite recording only one hit. Parker Coddou tripled and scored on a balk. Cain followed with an RBI groundout for an 8-0 lead, then Kay and pinch-hitter Kody O'Connor drove in a run each via walks.

Andrews struck out the first batter he faced in the seventh before ending the game with a grounder and a flyout.

Cain and Dane Simon finished with two hits each. For MVSU, Isaiah Valenzuela took the loss with five earned runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings.
