Colonels homer three times in 16-10 victory over MVSU

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team hit three home runs, including a grand slam by Jayden Kay, to pick up a series sweep over Mississippi Valley State with a 16-10 victory Sunday afternoon on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

With the win, Nicholls improved to 4-4 overall while MVSU slipped to 2-3.

Kay had three hits in the win and drove in five, while Edgar Alvarez also homered and finished with six RBIs. He hit a solo shot in the first inning and cleared the bases with a double in the second to fuel a six-run frame. Xane Washington's 2-run homer came in the fourth inning, giving Nicholls a 10-2 lead. Washington tallied four RBIs as he and Dane Simon totaled two hits each.

Devin Desandro (1-0) picked up the win, throwing five innings with two earned runs on four hits. He finished with two strikeouts and one walk.

Nicholls out-hit MVSU in the win, 13-11, and was able to take advantage of some spotty pitching. The Delta Devils walked a total of 10 batters and had three hit-by-pitches.

With the Colonels leading 12-3 in the sixth, MVSU rallied with five straight runs. Antonio Walker hit a 2-run homer before Maury Weaver tripled to center in the seventh for two more runs. Dreylin Holmes capped it with an RBI single.

Washington singled in the bottom half and two free passes loaded the bases for Kay. With the count full, Kay hit his first home run with a seventh-inning grand slam for a 16-8 Colonel lead.

Holmes homered in the ninth for the final two runs of the game.
