Colonels drop game at Jackson State, head to Memphis for weekend series

JACKSON, Miss. - The Nicholls State University baseball team dropped its first road test of the season, falling 9-3 at Jackson State Wednesday night.

Nicholls (5-5) and Jackson State (5-5) were tied at 3-3 before the Tigers plated three runs in the seventh and added three more in the eighth. JSU outhit the Colonels, 13-7, and had a clean game defensively while Nicholls committed two errors.

The first two runs of the game were courtesy of the Red and Gray as Garrett Felix had an RBI single in the first and Dane Simon followed with a sacrifice fly in the next frame. 

Chenar Brown tied the score in the third with a 2-run base hit. Simon gave Nicholls back the lead with another sac fly in the fourth, but in the fifth, Brown singled in the tying run.

Jackson State took the lead for good on its first of three RBI doubles to close out the game. Nicholls got singles in the eighth and ninth but were unable to cut into the lead.

Austin Trahan had two of the Colonels' seven hits. Parker Coddou and Simon each had a double.

Gavin Galy was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs in 1.1 innings. Five Colonels pitched in the loss and while they surrendered 13 hits, they also racked up 13 strikeouts. Starter Brandon Andrews (2.1 IP) led the way with five Ks.

Nicholls will start on the road for a three-game series at Memphis. Friday's opener is scheduled for 4 p.m.
