Colonels run-rule St. Thomas behind dominant pitching

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team matched its season-high with 16 strikeouts but needed one less inning, as the Colonels defeated St. Thomas, 10-0, in seven innings Wednesday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

Nicholls (8-6) received an outstanding outing on the mound by Josh Mancuso, who fanned 12 batters in 5.0 innings while allowing just two hits. Mason Turner and Luke Barbier each threw an inning and struck out two. The 16 strikeouts tied the performance in the eight-inning victory over Mississippi Valley State.

The Colonels had nine hits and scored all 10 runs in the first four innings. The offense scored one in the first and fourth, with a five-run second and three-run third in between.

Felix Garrett reached base all four times, going 3-for-3 with a double and a walk. Xane Washington and Jaden Collura added two hits each.

Edgar Alvarez drove in two via sacrifice flies, one in the first and one in the second. Austin Cain and Washington had RBI singles in the second while Dane Simon drove in one on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch then stole home.

Collura and Parker Coddou added RBI singles in the third before Collura plated the final run on a base hit to center.

Mancuso struck out the side in the second, fourth, and fifth innings. He allowed a leadoff single in the third but the runner was retired trying for a double. Dylan Lamb slapped a base hit to right but was thrown out at second by Washington. St. Thomas then had a one-out triple in the fifth but Mancuso struck out the last two batters to close out his outing.

The Celts had a runner reach in each of the last two innings but could not avoid the run-rule.
