Colonels slip up in finale at HBU

HOUSTON, Texas - The Nicholls State University baseball team was limited to four hits, all coming in the first five innings, as HBU took the Southland Conference series with a 9-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.

Xane Washington continued to swing a hot bat for Nicholls (17-13, 5-4 SLC), accounting for half of the hits with his fourth and fifth of the series. After the Colonels fell behind 5-0 on four RBI singles by the Huskies, Washington doubled in a run in the fifth before the second run scored on a Alec Paz sacrifice fly. But that would be it for the offense the rest of the way with the exception of two walks as HBU (11-21, 5-4 SLC) clinched the series.

The Huskies racked up 14 hits and were led by Kevin Ortiz with three hits and three RBIs. Nick Heckman (1-2) was tagged with nine of the hits, allowing five earned runs in 3.2 innings. Nico Saltaformaggio threw 4.0 innings out of the bullpen, giving up three earned on five hits. Both hurlers struck out four.

HBU extended its lead in the fifth and seventh on home runs by Diego Davila and Logan Letney.

Austin Spinney earned the win with 3.2 hitless innings of relief.
