SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Nicholls State University baseball team used three home run to plate all five runs and pitcher
Tyler Theriot turned in another quality start as the Colonels evened their series against UIW with a 5-3 victory Saturday night at Sullivan Field.
Nicholls (21-15, 8-6 SLC) trailed 3-1 through three innings with
Alec Paz homering to lead off the second. But in the fourth,
Jayden Kay sent an 0-2 pitch out of the park for a 3-run homer to give the Colonels the lead for good.
Garrett Felix added a solo shot in the sixth to make the final.
Theriot improved to 6-2 on the season, allowing two earned runs on five hits in 7.2 innings. The lefty notched a season-high eight strikeouts, but also walked a high of five batters. UIW tied the game at 1-1 in the second with the help of a Colonel error, then used RBI singles by Roberto Gonzalez and Hernan Yanez in the third to go up 3-1. The Colonels limited the damage in the frame with a double play.
Kay's go-ahead home run was set up by a Felix single and an
Austin Cain walk. Following a fielder's choice, Kay went deep off of Kayden Cassidy for his second homer of the season. Cassidy took the loss, surrendering four earned in 3.1 innings.
Chase Gearing picked up the save with 1.1 innings of work. He gave up a hit, walked one and struck out one.
