Theriot named All-Southland First Team, 6 Colonels earn SLC recognition

FRISCO, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team totaled six All-Southland selections, highlighted by first-team honoree Tyler Theriot, as the conference office announced Tuesday its 2022 postseason teams and awards.

Theriot (starting pitcher) was joined by second-team members Alec Paz (designated hitter) and Xane Washington (outfield), and third-team recipients Edgar Alvarez (first base), Parker Coddou (shortstop) and Devin Desandro (starting pitcher). Washington was also one of nine players in the league to be named to the All-Defensive Team, receiving the spot for right field.

Theriot was one of the top pitchers in the Southland, ranking third overall in ERA at 3.20. He posted a 7-4 record on the year and was 4-3 in Southland games, and ranked fifth in SLC play in strikeouts. He also had the best opponent batting average among starting pitchers at .207.

Theriot was named SLC Pitcher of the Week after tossing eight shutout innings in a win over Northwestern State. He threw seven-plus innings in all four of his SLC victories, also notching wins against HBU, UIW and New Orleans. In the NCAA, he ranked 14th in complete games and 63rd in hits per inning.

Paz ranked 15th in the Southland in batting average overall at .307 and was one of the league's top power hitters, tying for third with seven homers in conference and was fifth with nine overall. He totaled 30 RBIs on the season and was named SLC Hitter of the Week after hitting .400 with two doubles and two homers in the road series sweep at Southeastern. Paz had two 2-homer games in conference against McNeese and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Washington finished with a .291 batting average in conference and was .287 overall. He was 16th in the league in slugging, totaling nine doubles and eight home runs. Washington drove in 28 runs and finished with 14 multi-hit games, highlighted by a four-hit outing in a win at Memphis. He was stellar in defense as well, totaling eight outfield assists.

In his first season with the Colonels, Alvarez was one of the league's top run producers, ranking fourth overall in the Southland in RBIs with 48. He hit .282 with 10 doubles and was tied for fifth in the SLC with nine home runs. Alvarez had 14 multi-hit games and led Nicholls with 14 multi-RBI efforts.

Coddou had an outstanding all-around year as the Colonel shortstop, leading the team with a .310 batting average while hitting .313 in conference. Coddou totaled 11 multi-hit efforts and posted a career-high four hits in the finale at A&M-Corpus Christi. On defense, he led the Southland in assists in overall and conference, fielding at .946 percent.

A native of Thibodaux, Desandro finished ninth in strikeouts in league games with 34 and went 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA in conference. He notched wins against Northwestern State and New Orleans, tossing an eight-inning complete game versus the Privateers where he allowed one earned run. He also contributed with a save against Southeastern.

The all-conference teams are nominated and voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Voting for oneself or one's own athletes is not permitted.
