FRISCO, Texas – Four members of the Nicholls State University tennis program have garnered Southland Tennis All-Academic as the league announced Thursday its all-academic teams.
Pavle Drobnjakovic and
Antonio Sasso were named Southland All-Academic First Team for the men's squad, while
Carla Bouygues and
Jessie Mount earned second team on the women's side.
A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Drobnjakovic posted a 3.72 GPA as a finance major. He was an All-Southland First Team selection at No. 5 Singles and earned Southland Player of the Week once this season. He totaled a 9-8 record in singles which included a win over New Orleans.
Sasso has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in business administration. A native of Porto Alegre, Brazil, Sasso was also an all-league selection as he was named second-team for No. 3 doubles. He totaled a 10-7 overall record in singles and was 9-5 in doubles.
For the women, Bouygues is also a finance major with a 3.74 GPA. On the court, the native of France had a team-high 14 victories in singles and split her league matches, going 3-3. She posted a winning record in double play as well, finishing with a 9-8 record.
A graduate student from Melbourne, Australia, Mount had a perfect 4.0 GPA in her pursuit of a Master's in Mental Health Counseling. She totaled a 12-8 mark in singles in her lone season with the Colonels and earned one Southland Player of the Week. She led Nicholls with four Southland victories while adding six wins in doubles.
The average GPA of the men's honorees is 3.91, and 10 individuals boast a mark of 3.80 or higher, including three with a perfect 4.00. The average GPA of the women's honorees is 3.91, five honorees earned a perfect 4.00 GPA with five individuals sitting at a 3.80 or higher mark.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coach, sports information director and an academic/compliance staff member from each institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the eight member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
