THIBODAUX, La.- The Nicholls State University football teams' re-released 2022 schedule features five home games and six road contests. Nicholls starts the season as road warriors with five of its first six games being in enemy territory.
The schedule features minor adjustments from the previously released slate. With the addition of UIW and Lamar to league play, Nicholls will now travel to Lamar instead of having two matchups against McNeese. The Colonels and UIW were originally already scheduled to play, and the contest will remain as a nonconference matchup.Â
On Sept. 3, the Colonels will kick off the eighth season under head coach
Tim Rebowe in Mobile, Alabama where they will take on South Alabama. The Red and Gray have not beaten the Jaguars in three tries, however, the last matchup in 2016 was a 41-40 overtime thriller.
On Sept. 10, Nicholls will travel to Monroe to battle with the Warhawks of ULM. This will be the 26th meeting between the teams and first since 2015.
The Colonels' third game of the season on Sept. 17, will take place in Cape Girardeau, Missouri against Southeast Missouri State University. This will be the third time these two teams have met. The Colonels won the first two matchups in 1975 and 1985.
On Sept. 24, the Red and Gray will return home and play its first home game at John L. Guidry Stadium against former Southland foe Jacksonville State. The Colonels and Gamecocks have played each other 15 times and record wise they have split the last 10 meetings.
On Oct. 1, the Colonels open conference play in Natchitoches at Northwestern State University. This will be the 49thmeeting between the schools and Nicholls is currently on a six-game winning streak against the Demons.
On Oct. 8, Nicholls will have an even longer winning streak on the line as they travel to Houston, Texas to take on Houston Baptist University. The Colonels have won seven-straight games against the Huskies, including two wins in the fall season.
For the final non-conference game, Nicholls will host University of the Incarnate Word on Oct. 15. UIW won the Southland last season and has bested the Colonels in the last two meetings after Nicholls won five straight to lead the all-time series 5-4.
On Oct. 22, the Red and Gray host McNeese. The Colonels have beaten the Cowboys three times in the last five seasons including the last two home meetings.Â
For the final road test on Oct.29, NSU will travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar. The Colonels have not made the trip to Beaumont since 2017. Additionally, the Red and Gray have won the last five games against the Cardinals, including a dominating 55-0 victory in the 2021 spring season.Â
Following the bye week, the Colonels will host new Southland member Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 12. The Lions are making the leap to Division I after being in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference from 1931-2022.
The final game of the season will be on Nov. 17, the 32nd edition of the River Bell Classic against Southeastern. The Colonels have beaten the Lions in three of the last River Bell Classics and the all-time series record is 16-16.
