WACO, Texas - The Nicholls State University football team received eight points in the AFCA FCS Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll, which was released Monday by the American Football Coaches Association.
The Colonels finished 2021 with a 6-5 record, marking their fifth consecutive winning season. Of the five losses, two were against FBS programs including nationally-ranked Louisiana, and the other three came against FCS playoff teams. Nicholls ended the year by winning four of the final five games, capped with a win over ranked Southeastern.
Nicholls was selected to finish in third in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll. Preseason favorite UIW ranked 14th in the AFCA poll while Southeastern ranked 16th.
The Colonels open the season at South Alabama on Sept. 3. Following three road games, Nicholls hosts Jacksonville State for the home opener on Sept. 24.
