CHOUDRANT, La. - The Nicholls State University men's golf team ended its three-day season-opening event with a low-round 299 in the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, held at the Squire Creek Country Club.
Nicholls finished with a 921 to take last in the tournament but had a drastic improvement in Day 3. After a 310 and 312 on Sunday and Monday, respectively, the squad posted a sub-300 score to wrap up the intercollegiate.
Ryan O'Neil was the top finisher for the Colonels as he shot 7-over 223. He was able to decrease his score in each round as well, ending with an even 72. O'Neil posted a strong finish with four birdies and no bogeys in the final nine holes.
Martin Trochu had a 228 and was helped by his opening round of 1-over 73. He sank five birdies on Sunday and added three more Tuesday.
Mickael Najmark totaled a 233 and recorded the lone eagle for the Colonels. Najmark carded a three on the par-5 Hole No. 2.
Seeing their first action as Colonels,
Peyton Canter shot a 237 while
Zachary Morvant had a 251.
Southern Miss took the team title with a 836, edging Middle Tennessee State by one stroke. The Golden Eagles also claimed the individual crown thanks to Thongpipat Rattanayanon's 11-under 205.

The Colonels will head to Tennessee for the Grover Page Classic, hosted by UT Martin. The opening 36 holes will be played Monday, Sept. 19.
