Nicholls' Canady Earns SLC Honors

THIBODAUX, La. -- Nicholls State University cross country junior Randy Canady has been named Southland Conference Men's Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The Groesbeck, Texas native, finished the 6-kilometer race at the LSU XC Invitational with a time of 18:40.4 to claim sixth place. His time helped the Colonels capture second place in the team standings behind LSU.

For Canady, this is his second top ten finish of the season after he was the eighth individual to cross the finish line in the four-mile race at the fourth Annual Nicholls XC Invitational posting a time of 20:39.

Nicholls head cross country coach Stefanie Slekis gave her thoughts on Canady's achievement.

"This result is a long time coming for Randy and it is great for him to be able to receive some recognition for it with Runner of the Week honors from our conference," Slekis said. "It was exciting to see it all starting to click this season in a big way, first at our home meet, and then really well at LSU.

Slekis spoke about the growth she has seen from Canady.

"He has been building volume and intensity in his training since he transferred in last year from junior college," Slekis stated. "I really appreciate how much Randy has really bought into our training program and me as a coach."

Slekis talked about Canady and the team-building momentum.

"The group he raced with Friday has some guys that have run well in some big cross-country races during their careers so we are both excited to see how much improvement Randy can see at the Arturo Barrios Invitational on October 15th," Slekis said. "We will see 28 NCAA Division I south central region teams there and six Southland Conference teams so it will feel like a true pre-NCAA South Central region meet and serve as a great test for Randy and the rest of our team."
