Nicholls WBB Looks to Finish Calendar Year Strong

THIBODAUX, La. – After being off for a week the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will return to the hardwood at Grambling State University on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at noon.
 
This will be the fifth matchup between the Colonels and Tigers. Grambling leads the all-time series 3-1 despite Nicholls winning the latest matchup during the 2016-17 campaign. Last time out the Colonels beat South Alabama (61-58) in Mobile and fell to UAB (73-62) at home.
 
Sophomore forward Lexi Alexander had a pair of scoring outbursts to lead the Red & Gray and bring her scoring average up to 12.8. In the win against the Jaguars, she finished with a game-high 25 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while hitting nine of 10 shots from the foul line. In the game against the Blazers, she hit eight field goals and finished with 18 points.
 
Alexander is one of two individuals that is averaging double figure points. Freshman guard Britiya Curtis scored 15 points while shooting 50 percent (6-12) from the field and from beyond the arc (3-6). Alexander leads the team in rebounds (5.5) and total blocks (5), while Curtis leads the unit in total steals with 17.
 
Senior guard Kyla Hamilton and junior forward Deonna Brister average 7.9 points and 7.4 points per contest, respectively. Freshman guard Betzalys Delgado paces the offense with 3.6 assists.
 
Overall, Nicholls scores 63.8 ppg while shooting .405 from the field, .292 from long range and .646 from the charity stripe.
 
Grambling (4-5) boasts a 3-0 home record on Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center that includes a 70-67 victory over Arizona State. The Tigers also have a 64-59 triumph over fellow Southland foe Northwestern State. Last week, Grambling coasted to victory over Wiley College and was clipped by Minnesota in Minneapolis.
 
The Tigers are led by DeMya Young who averages 12.5 points, while shooting .371 from the field and .377 from beyond the arc, respectively. Also averaging double figures is Douthshine Prien who scores 10.7 points and a team-best 4.3 assists per contest.
 
Overall, Grambling scores 73.3 ppg while shooting .377 from the field, .301 from long range and .685 from the charity stripe.

The Red & Gray (6-5) will open the new year beginning Southland Conference action hosting Southeastern on Thursday, Jan. 4. The Colonels will hit the road to Houston, Texas to take on HCU.
