THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University football team had three players earn Stats Perform All-America honors as the organization announced Tuesday its postseason all-America teams.
Offensive lineman
Mark Barthelemy and safety
Tyler Morton both garnered their second all-American honors as Barthelemy was a second-team selection and Morton landed on third team. Defensive tackle
Rasheed Lovelace received Freshman All-America honors -- his third this season.
Barthelemy anchored the left side of the offensive line at tackle and was named Southland Conference Lineman of the Year. The Colonels averaged nearly 220 yards on the ground in league games and had two running backs named All-SLC First Team --
Jaylon Spears and
Collin Guggenheim. The offensive line also ranked second in the league in tackles for loss allowed and sacks allowed. A native of Opelousas, Louisiana, Barthelemy was also a first-team All-SLC honoree and second-team AP All-America.
Morton also received several accolades this season, earning All-Southland First Team along with two league Player of the Week awards, two national honorable mentions and one Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) honor. For the year, Morton totaled 63 tackles with 4.0 for loss and had four of the defense's 16 interceptions. Morton ranked eighth in the FCS in interceptions per game, helping the Colonels to the second-most picks in the FCS. The St. Rose, Louisiana native had two games where he was responsible for two turnovers -- two picks against HCU and an interception and forced fumble at McNeese.
Lovelace helped plug up the rushing lanes as Nicholls ranked No. 1 in the Southland Conference in rushing defense. For the season, he totaled 27 stops with 2.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks and an interception. In the win at Texas A&M-Commerce, Lovelace posted a career-high six tackles in the 27-7 win over the Lions.
The All-America team consists of 109 players representing all 13 FCS leagues and 57 schools. Defending national champion South Dakota State, UAlbany, Holy Cross and North Dakota State had the most selections with five each, while Montana State, UT Martin and Weber State are next up with four each.
