Velasquez-Wilson Named Nicholls Assistant Volleyball Coach

THIBODAUX, La. -- Head Coach Jonea Rima has announced Daniel Velasquez-Wilson as her assistant volleyball coach for the upcoming season.

Velasquez-Wilson began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Shadow Ridge's indoor team and was there from 2020-2023.

In his final season at Shadow Ridge, he was named the beach volleyball head coach. While at the helm, he coached an undefeated flight 1 pair and 2nd seed qualification for the 6A Division State Championship Tournament. His coaching efforts helped the team garner multiple award winners including the AIA Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, two 1st Team All-AIA selections, two 2nd Team All-AIA selections, two honorable mentions.

During the year, he served as an assistant coach for the 17u Arizona Storm Elite volleyball club team out of Phoenix where he had two student-athletes be selected for the Arizona Region High Performance Teams.

For the 2022-23 school year, Velasquez-Wilson was also a graduate assistant for the Ottawa University Arizona (OUAZ) women's volleyball program. As a GA he spearheaded defensive coordination efforts, resulting in the team earning two All-Conference selections and the GSAC conference Libero of the Year award.

From 2021-2023 he served as the boys volleyball head coach for 17u Hanai Volleyball Club and a Corporate Communications Specialist/HR Communications & Policy intern for Onsemi semiconductor manufacturing company. As the coach of Hanai Volleyball club he guided the team to strong finishes in highly competitive tournaments, including a top 8 finish in the Arizona 17s Open Region. He also had several student-athletes named to AVCA watch lists and had two athletes selected to the Arizona Region High Performance teams.

He began working in college athletics as a Public Relations Media Intern for Missouri Valley College where he collaborated with the athletic department to promote games and events leading to a 15% increase in attendance and more brand awareness.

The Las Vegas, Nevada native earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations from Missouri Valley College (2020) and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Ottawa University Arizona (2023) where he played four seasons as a libero.
