Ennis Named Finalist for Buck Buchanan Award

THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls State University linebacker Eli Ennis received one of the FCS's highest honors on Tuesday as the Colonels' leading tackler was named finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which recognizes the top defensive player in the nation.

Ennis, who was named All-Southland First Team, racked up 111 tackles on the season, ranking third in the SLC with 9.3 per game. Ennis tied for first in the league in fumbles recoveries (3), second in forced fumbles (3), and third in interceptions (3) while adding 7.5 TFL with two sacks. The Ohatchee, Alabama native registered a 14-tackle effort at UIW and racked up 13 stops at LSU. His other accolades included being named SLC Defensive Player of the Week following the opening week and Phil Steele FCS Midseason All-American Third Team.

Nationally, Ennis ranked 18th in the FCS in tackles, 13th in fumble recoveries and 17th in forced fumbles. He helped Nicholls to a No. 4 ranking in rushing defense with a school record 83.9 yards allowed. The Colonels were also third in turnovers (29) and interceptions (19) while ranking 12th in total defense with 297 yards allowed per game. Nicholls gave up just six rushing touchdowns this season, tying South Dakota State for the fewest surrendered.

The award is named for legendary defensive lineman Junious "Buck" Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State as part of his Hall of Fame career.

All 13 FCS conferences are represented by a finalist. The winner, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 4 in Frisco, Texas.
