THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University senior first baseman
Edgar Alvarez was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Alvarez had an outstanding opening weekend, batting .545 with two home runs, two doubles, six RBIs and nine runs scored in the Colonels' sweep over Sacred Heart.
In the opener, Alvarez hit a 3-run shot and drove in five runs. The Orlando, Florida native, went 3-for-3 on Saturday with a solo homer, then added a ground-rule double in the finale. For the weekend, the Colonel first baseman was walked five times and finished with an impressive .688 on-base percentage.
The Colonels scored 40 runs against the Pioneers and secured their first season opening sweep since 2016.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
