THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for a three-game series against the University of Nebraska on March 15-17.
The Colonels enter the series 17-3 after beating Dillard 9-3 on Tuesday night. The Cornhuskers enter the weekend 10-5 after splitting games at Wichita State earlier this week.
The Colonels and Cornhuskers will be playing the third three game series. In the first matchup (2016) Nebraska won the series but the Colonels took the middle game, and in last year's meeting on a neutral field in Kansas, the Cornhuskers won the first two games before the Red & Gray won game three 10-7.
So far this season, Nicholls has had one of the most efficient and productive offenses in the country. The Red & Gray leads the country in runs (211), and hits (225), while posting the seventh best batting average (.348) and 11th in on base percentage (.459). Additionally, the unit has tallied the sixth most doubles (47) and stolen bases (47).
The Colonels are led by
Edgar Alvarez who ranks sixth nationally in doubles (10) and hits (31) while boasting the 16th best batting average (.470).
Garrett Felix and
Parker Coddou are currently batting .375 and .325 while combining for 44 runs and 33 RBI.
In the bullpen, starting pitchers
Jacob Mayers (.270) and
Michael Quevedo (.322) have combined for five wins and 51 strikeouts, while relief pitchers
Nico Saltaformaggio (.394) and
Devin Desandro (.235) have combined for 27 strikeouts. The Red & Gray has played stout defense and registered five shutouts.
