THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will host Louisiana Tech on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m.
The Colonels enter the matchup 17-6 after losing their first three game series of the season at Nebraska on March 15-17. In the other dugout, the Bulldogs swept Northwestern State over the weekend and fell 11-1 to No. 4 LSU last night in Baton Rouge.
The Colonels and Bulldogs have met 32 times with LA Tech leading the series 17-15. However, the Nicholls won the last matchup 8-0 (2/24/23) and the last game in Thibodaux 5-4 (3/1/22).
Heading into Wednesday's contest, the Colonels have the nation's second most hits (243) and runs (221) this season while posting the 12th best batting average (.329) and walks (134). Those numbers are the best marks in the Southland Conference.
The Colonels are led by
Edgar Alvarez who ranks fifth nationally in doubles (11) and fourth in hits (36) while boasting the 10th best batting average (.468).
Drake Anderson and
Garrett Felix are currently batting .333 and .324 while combining for 32 runs and 30 RBI.
In the bullpen, starting pitchers
Jacob Mayers (3.65) and
Michael Quevedo (3.91) have combined for five wins and 57 strikeouts, while relief pitchers
Nico Saltaformaggio (3.50) and
Devin Desandro (5.40) have combined for 30 strikeouts. The Red & Gray has played stout defense and registered five shutouts.
