THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will conclude the month across state lines as they play a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 28-30.
 
Last week the Colonels opened Southland Conference play with a series loss to UNO. The Red & Gray suffered a seventh consecutive loss and was swept at home for the first time since 2016. The Islanders opened SLC play last week with a series win at UIW before beating Texas 4-1 in Austin on Tuesday night.
 
Despite the drought in the win column, Nicholls still has one of the most productive offenses in the country. The unit has the seventh most runs (242), 15th most hits 277, while posting the 25th best batting average (.317).
 
The Colonels offense is led by Edgar Alvarez, Parker Coddou, and Garrett Felix. Alvarez boasts the nation's second-best batting average (.479), third most hits (45), eighth most doubles (12), and his 22 free passes has helped him hold the seventh best on base percentage (.562). Coddou is batting .321 while adding 15 RBI and has scored a team-high 35 runs. Felix is batting .308 and 21 RBI and has scored 18 runs.
 
In the bullpen, starting pitchers Jacob Mayers (3.19) and Michael Quevedo (4.71) have combined for five wins and 73 strikeouts. Last week, Mayers fanned a career high 12 batters and now leads the SLC in strikeouts (46) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.35).
 
The Islanders have three players with at least 95 at bats while batting over .300. Isaac Webb leads the team with 41 hits while batting .333. Garrett Gruell bats .330 and leads the team with seven home runs and 21 RBI. Sebastian Trinidad boasts a team-best .357 batting average and has eight doubles and 18 RBI.
 
The Colonels won last year's series over the Islanders, however the Islanders lead the all-time series 26-13 dating back to 2008.
