THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will open the month against the University of Louisiana at M.L. "Tigue"Moore Field at Russo Park on Tuesday, April 2 at 6 p.m. while Wednesday's home game against MVSU is canceled.
The Colonels (20-10) enter the mid-week game against the Ragin' Cajuns after sweeping Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 28-30. Louisiana (20-8) is currently on an 11-game winning streak after sweeping Texas State over the weekend. The action will be streamed on ESPN+.
Nicholls and UL have met 80 times since 1981 with Ragin' Cajuns leading the all-time series 49-31. Three of the last four meetings have been decided by one run including the Colonels' 6-5 victory in 2022.
Nicholls has one of the most efficient and productive offenses in the nation. Currently the Colonels have scored the seventh most runs (273), with the fifth most hits (318), while boasting the 12th best batting average (.322). Additionally, the unit has 16th most doubles (66), 22nd most walks (163), and 30th best on base percentage (.426). The Red & Gray sit atop the Southland Conference in those statistical categories.
The Colonels offense is led by
Edgar Alvarez,
Parker Coddou, and
Garrett Felix. Alvarez boasts the nation's foruth-best batting average (.462), fifth most hits (49), 21st most doubles (12), and his 36 free passes has helped him hold the ninth best on base percentage (.555). Coddou is batting .345 while adding 20 RBI and has scored a team-high 41 runs. Felix is batting .317 and has 24 RBI and has scored 22 runs.
The Ragin' Cajuns are led by Kyle DeBarge (.313), who has 35 hits, including six extra base hits, eight home runs, and 30 RBI. Josh Alexander (.310) and John Taylor (.307) add 26 and 31 hits, respectively, while combining for 29 RBI.
