Colonels sweep Lions in Friday doubleheader

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team received complete game efforts from Audrey McNeill and Averi Paden as the Colonels swept Texas A&M-Commerce with 6-2 and 4-2 wins on Friday at Swanner Field at Geosurfaces Park.

Nicholls (21-17, 8-3 SLC) will go for the sweep on Saturday against the Lions (7-35, 0-14 SLC) with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.

Game 1 - Nicholls 6, TAMUC 2

Audrey McNeill tossed a complete game with four strikeouts and the Colonels bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit with six unanswered runs to take the series opener.

After the Lions plated a run in the first and second inning, the Colonels answered with run-scoring singles by Brynne Songy and Reagan Heflin to knot the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. In the third, Abby Andersen laced a double to put Nicholls ahead, driving in Mckenzie Champagne who reached on a leadoff walk. Champagne finished off the scoring in the sixth with a two-run single.

Champagne led the offense with a 3-for-3 outing while Heflin and Erin Krause had two hits each. Nicholls totaled nine hits against the Lions.

Charli Anger touched up McNeill with an RBI single in the first before Ashlynn Griffith gave TAMUC a 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout in the second. But McNeill did not allow another hit until the sixth inning before retiring the Lions in order in the seventh to finish the complete game.

Game 2 - Nicholls 4, TAMUC 2

The Colonels plated three runs in the third and it turned out to be more than enough for Paden as Nicholls secured the series with a 4-2 win.

Nicholls led 4-1 in the seventh before Texas A&M-Commerce pieced together a late rally. Diamond Sefe doubled to put runners in scoring position with two down before Anger hit a base hit to left center for an RBI. On the play, Sefe tried to score as well but was thrown out at the plate by Champagne to end the game.

Paden allowed seven hits while striking out two for her first complete seven-inning game of the season. The Lions outhit the Colonels, 7-6, but only scored one run on a Stephanie Tapia RBI double before their late rally.

Heflin turned in another two-hit effort and was joined by Andersen with two hits. Songy started the scoring in the three-run second with an RBI groundout before Samantha Gwiazda and Heflin followed with run-scoring singles.

With Nicholls leading 3-1 in the fifth, the Colonels added another run on a Lion error. Krause led the frame off with a double and after two walks loaded the bases, she made a big turn towards home plate. Pitcher Destiny Martinez tried to throw her out at third but the ball got away for a run.

Nicholls drew a pair of free passes in the sixth but could not add to its lead. In the seventh, Tehya Pitts started the rally for the Lions with a single to left center.
