THIBODAUX, La. - Molly Yoo tossed a two-hit shutout while the offense pieced together three multi-run innings as the Nicholls State University softball team earned its second sweep of the season with an 8-0 victory in five innings against Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.
Yoo struck out four batters in the victory including one to end the first inning after she allowed a bunt single and a hit-by-pitch. The strikeout was the second of 13 consecutive retired batters for the sophomore before the Lions had a two-out single in the final inning. Yoo then notched her fourth strikeout to end the game.
Nicholls (22-17, 9-3 SLC) totaled seven hits in the win with five going for extra bases. Three came in the first inning as
Claire Sisco led off with a double before
Erin Krause and
Mckenzie Champagne had run-scoring triples.
Abby Andersen gave the Colonels a 3-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly.
In the second,
Molly VandenBout brought home
Alexa Poche' with an RBI double. She later scored on an error for a 5-0 lead.
The Colonels put the run-rule into play with three runs in the fourth. Sisco recorded her second hit of the day for the inning's first run, then
Reagan Heflin belted an RBI double. Andersen finished off the scoring with a base hit up the middle.
Texas A&M-Commerce (7-36, 0-15 SLC) pinch hit all three batters in the fifth as Jenna Joyce ended Yoo's retired batters' streak with a two-out single between third and short.
Maddie Muller took the loss for the Lions, allowing three runs on three hits. She exited the game after recording just one out in the first. Destiny Martinez had the longest outing for the four pitchers, lasting 2.1 innings with an earned run on two hits.

Nicholls will host Southern University on Wednesday, April 10 for its final home midweek nonconference game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
