Colonels Hosts Cowboys to Conclude Regular Season Action

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will conclude its regular season with a three-game series against McNeese on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on May 16-18.
 
The Colonels will celebrate Senior Day with a presentation prior to Saturday's action. Additionally, the contests on Thursday and Saturday will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
Last week, Nicholls (32-19, 14-7 SLC) secured the tie breaker with league leading Lamar and enter the final week of play one game behind the Cardinals in the SLC standings. McNeese (28-23, 10-11 SLC) won its final home game of the season against Texas State on Tuesday and enters the weekend in fourth place in the SLC standings.
 
The Red & Gray pitching staff earned their sixth shutout of the season in Sunday's series clinching win over Lamar and currently the unit is one of seven schools in the country that have produced more than five.
 
For the second week in a row, senior pitcher Nico Saltaformaggio, who picked up both wins in relief over Lamar, was named SLC Pitcher of the Week. He posted a 1.00 ERA in nine innings of work to become one of six SLC pitchers with at least six victories. Additionally, he now posts the league's fifth best ERA (3.54) and eighth best opposing batting average (.253).
 
Jacob Mayers (4.47) leads the SLC in strikeouts (91) and opposing batting average (.160). Michael Quevedo (4.98) has five wins and ranks ninth in opposing batting average (.256) and has 60 strikeouts.
 
The Red & Gray offense has been clicking on all cylinders all season as unit ranks within the top 50 of multiple statistical categories. They have tallied 39th most hits (524) and has scored the 29th most runs (424). Additionally, the Colonels boasts the 43rd best batting average (.303) and has executed the most sacrifice flies in the country with 45. Nicholls ranks first in the SLC in those respective categories.
 
The potent Colonel offense features multiple players batting over .300. Edgar Alvarez leads the way as he holds the nation's third-best batting average (.427), ninth most hits (82), and his 44 free passes help him hold the 11th best on base percentage (.527). He has produced 59 RBI and has scored a team-high 63 times.
 
The Colonels hold the tie breaker with Lamar and will enter the final week of play one game behind the Cardinals in the SLC standings.
