THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team will conclude its six-game road swing with a trip to McNeese on Saturday before wrapping up at UIW on Monday.
The matchup with McNeese is slated for 4 p.m. while UIW's game is set for 6:30 p.m.
Nicholls (9-6, 3-1 SLC), which last played at home on Dec. 11, has reeled off four road victories this season including an 83-61 win at East Texas A&M on Monday.
Michael Gray Jr. and
Jamal West Jr. each scored 17 points to pace the offense and West added five blocks on the defensive end.Â
In the four league games this season,
Byron Ireland leads the team in scoring at 15.8 points while adding over four assists per outing. Gray is close behind in scoring at 15.0 ppg, and West (11.5) and
Trae English (10.5) are also averaging double figures. English is in his first season with the Colonels after beginning his career at McNeese.
The Cowboys (10-5, 4-0 SLC) are one of two teams in the Southland without a league loss. The defending champs have faced little resistance so far in conference, outscoring the opposition by an average of 23.8 points. McNeese took all three contests versus Nicholls last year, capped with a 92-76 victory in the SLC championship game in Lake Charles.
The reigning SLC Player of the Week, Javohn Garcia, heads the Cowboy offense at 20.0 ppg in the four games. Sincere Parker is second at 15 per game and three others are averaging double figures as well.
UIW (9-6, 2-2 SLC) will head to HCU on Saturday before hosting the Colonels. The Cardinals' league wins came against East Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin, and the losses were versus Lamar, the other unbeaten team, and Northwestern State.
Davion Bailey has fueled UIW on offense, averaging 18.1 points per game while knocking down 55 three-pointers at an impressive 43.7 percent. Jalin Anderson leads the SLC in assists with an average of 6.0 per outing.
Nicholls has won 11 of the last 13 matchups, helped by a current three-game winning streak. The Colonels outlasted UIW in overtime, 78-74, in their last trip to San Antonio.Â
