FRISCO, Texas - For the third year in a row, the Nicholls State University football team landed four players on the Southland Conference Football All-Academic Team as
Zack Bernard and
Collin Guggenheim were repeat selections and were joined by
Jake Dalmado and
Pat McQuaide.
Bernard was named to the all-academic team for the third time in his career. The defensive lineman registered a 3.70 grade point average as a health science - pre-professional major. On the field, Bernard was an All-SLC First Team honoree after totaling 42 tackles with 4.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. Bernard had a strong finish to his final campaign, recording a sack in three of the last four games, and had a high of eight tackles at Lamar with 2.0 tackles for loss.
Guggenheim was also a three-time academic selection, posting a 3.38 GPA in graduate school in Master of Education – K-12 Leadership. As the Colonels' lead running back, Guggenheim rushed for the fourth-most yards in the SLC with 843 and totaled eight touchdowns. His best performance of his senior season came at LSU where he ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
Dalmado earned his first academic honor after posting a 3.56 GPA in criminal justice. He joined Bernard as an All-SLC First Team selection for the defense, leading the Southland with nine sacks while ranking third with 12.5 tackles for loss. In his first season at linebacker, Dalmado was a two-time SLC Defensive Player of the Week.
Also in graduate school, McQuaide registered a 3.80 GPA in Master of Education Leadership – Higher Education Administration. In his second season as quarterback, McQuaide threw for 2,218 yards and 14 touchdowns while also rushing for two scores. He had a season-high 298 yards and two total TDs in River Bell Classic in his final game.
The team was voted upon by the head coach, sports information director, and an academic/compliance staff member from each school. To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA through the semester during the sport's championship, completed at least one full semester at the school, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions during the most recently completed season.
First team all-conference selections who meet the qualifications are automatically selected to the team.
