THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will continue SLC play with road games at UIW (Jan. 9) and McNeese (Jan. 11).
Last week, Nicholls (8-5, 1-3 SLC) dropped a pair of road games at East Texas A&M and Northwestern State to open the New Year.
UIW enters the week 7-6 overall and 2-2 in league play after falling to Lamar and SFA. McNeese is 6-8 overall and 1-2 in SLC action after splitting games against Northwestern State and East Texas A&M.
The Colonels is led by junior guard
Tanita Swift who exploded for 28 points in last week's game against the Lions. She now leads the SLC in scoring (16.4) while being one of 15 players in the league that is shooting over 45 percent from field. Swift also leads the SLC in minutes per game (33.8) and is one of eight players to average two or more steals per contest (2.2).
Senior forward
Deonna Brister and sophomore guard
Britiya Curtis average 8.8 and 8.1 points per game while being efficient. Brister has the 8th best field goal percentage (.494) and the 4th percentage from beyond the arc (.459) in the SLC. Curtis ranks 20th in long range percentage (.315).
The Red & Gray have been stout defensively as they boast the SLC's fourth best scoring defense (56.8) and third best turnover margin (2.15). Additionally, four Colonels haul in at least five rebounds a game with
Elli Garnett leading the way, (5.8) followed by
Emani Burks and Brister (5.4), and Swift (5). Burks also has the fourth most blocks in the SLC (19).
