THIBODAUX, La. – After 11 days of rest, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will close out the calendar year with road contests at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Dec. 29) and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (Dec. 31).
Nicholls (5-4, 1-1 SLC) began league competition by splitting their first two games. After falling to UIW on a game winning layup, the Colonels bounced back with a 70-47 victory over HCU.
The Colonels are led by three double figure scorers as
Jesslynn Jalomo leads the way with 12.1 followed by
Jasmine Matthews (10.6), and
Sh'Diamond McKnight (10.1).
Anyra Wilson paces the offense with 3.3 assists per game while leading the team and ranking 57th nationally with 2.6 steals per game.
Emani Burks is a force inside as she hauls in 6.6 rebounds and leads the SLC with 1.4 blocks per game. The Red & Gray welcomed back senior guard
Tanita Swift once league action started. She has scored 14 points in the two games.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-8, 0-2 SLC) dropped their first two league games to Lamar (77-49) and Stephen F. Austin (84-62). they will host New Orleans after the matchup with the Colonels. The Islanders are led by Samora Watson and Marissa Shelton who average 12.4 and 10.6 points per contest. K'Nari Holliday leads the team with 6.9 rebounds.
UTRGV (4-7, 1-1 SLC) split their first two league games beating SFA by two after losing to Lamar by eight. The Vaqueros are coming off a pair of losses to North Dakota State (82-60) and South Dakota (71-44) in the Malibu Classic. UTRGV is led by the SLC's second most prolific scorer Jalayah Ingram who scores 17.4 points per game. She has scored at least 15 points in seven contests and has a season high of 25 against Texas State and SFA.
