THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will hit the road for the final time as the Colonels take on Lamar University (Feb. 19) and Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 21).
Tipoff on Thursday against Lamar is slated for 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's game will tipoff at 2:00 p.m.
Nicholls (12-12, 8-9 SLC) has split its last two weekends, coming off a 59-43 win at HCU on Thursday before UIW rallied for a 72-66 victory on Saturday. With five games remaining in the season, the Colonels are tied for seventh in the standings and a sweep would secure a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Colonels have dropped the last six against Lamar (15-9, 12-5 SLC), last falling 72-64 at home against the Cardinals in January.
Tanita Swift poured in a season-high 20 points in the loss and heads into the week as the Colonels' third-leading scorer at 9.9 points per game.
Sh'Diamond McKnight and
Marie Kenembeni have emerged as the leading scorers, averaging 11.0 and 10.8 ppg, respectively. McKnight has scored in double figures in her last four outings including her season-high of 22, while Kenembeni has reached double digits in six of the last eight. Kenembeni led Nicholls with 18 points in the last game at UIW.
The Cardinals are in contention for a Top 2 seed, trailing UTRGV by just one game in the standings. Lamar is 10-1 at home this season with its lone loss coming to first-place McNeese.
SFA (18-8, 12-5 SLC) is tied with Lamar for third and has also been tough to beat at home with an 11-3 mark. In their last home stand, the Ladyjacks suffered a close loss to East Texas A&M before winning on a buzzer-beater against Lamar.Â
