Colonels Clipped by Skyhawks in 12 Inning Thriller

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell 6-3 in 12 innings to UT-Martin on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Friday night.

The game began as a pitching duel as Nicholls starter Nuno Parache began the game by retiring the UT-Martin batters in order in the first four innings of the game. His momentum carried over to the offense as Casey Artigues scored on a play where Jaxon Milam reached on an error by the Skyhawks' shortstop.

After the Colonels took a 1-0 lead both teams scored two runs in the fifth inning. With two down in the top of the frame, Parache lost his no hitter via a solo home run before the Skyhawks added a second run on a close play at the plate a few plays later. In the home half of the frame following a walk by Karson Irvin, Caston Thompson blasted a two-run homer to left field to put the Colonels up 3-2.

Following a scoreless sixth inning, UTM tied the game with a two out single in the seventh inning. The game was tied at three for four full stanzas before the Skyhawks scored three runs in the 12th inning on a triple, single, and a ground out.

For the Colonels, Keegan Giger, Milam, Thompson, Greyson Shafer, and Irvin had one hit apiece. The Red & Gray pitching staff recorded 11 strikeouts as Parache finished with five in six innings of work. Cole Simoneaux (0-1) picked up three strikeouts and had two 1-2-3 innings of his own. Peyton Lacy added two strikeouts in two full frames of work. Owen Schexanydre allowed one hit in his lone stanza while one of Dalton Hill's two outs was a strikeout.
