THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was beaten 7-4 by UTRGV on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
Nicholls got out to a slow start as UTRGV jumped out to a four-run lead as they scored runs on three consecutive doubles in the second inning. Following a 1-2-3 inning from relief pitcher Cole Simoneaux, Greyson Shafer cut the Colonels' deficit in half with a two-run blast to deep left field.
 
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth frame before Carter Jenkins laced a one out solo home run to left field to bring the Colonels within one in the sixth. The Colonels tied the game at four on an infield single by Matt Melancon that allowed Karson Irvin to score from third.
 
The Vaqueros retook the lead in the eighth inning on a base hit to center field. UTRGV then extended their lead with two runs in the ninth The Colonels had two hits in the final two innings but was unable to tie or take the lead.
